What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is an alternative system of medicine that was devised over 200 years ago. It is based on the principle of ‘Like cures Like’,and draws its medicine from the animal, plant and mineral worlds.

Hippocrates, ‘The Father of Medicine’ said there were two Laws of Healing:  The Law of Oppositesand the Law of Similars.Conventional medicine often uses the Law of Oppositesto treat illness, e.g. anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories, anti- convulsants, anti-hypertensives, anti-depressants etc.

Homeopathy uses the Law of Similars– often described as treating ‘like with like’.   In other words the same substance that can cause the symptoms can be used to treat them.

Take the substance coffee for example, which can cause restlessness and insomnia. The homeopathic remedy ‘coffea’ made from coffee can be used to treat insomnia and aid restful sleep.

Another example of the Law of Similars can be illustrated by the action of the well known poison Arsenic.   If you were unfortunate enough to ingest Arsenic, you would likely suffer violent diarrhoea and vomiting.  The homeopathic remedy, Arsenicum Album is often prescribed for the symptoms of food poisoning - violent diarrhoea and vomiting.

There is no doubt that this ‘Law of Similars’ is effective, and examples of its action can be seen in conventional medicine, though they are rarely acknowledged as such.
